'The Citadel' is an uplifting drama movie made in Britain in1938. It stars Robert Donat and Rosalind Russell and was directed by King Vidor. The movie was based on the hugely successful novel of the same name by A J Cronin which had been published the previous year. The film was critically well received and was nominated for four Oscars although winning none.

The cast is excellent, dominated by Robert Donat at his best and including a young Rex Harrison and Ralph Richardson. The popularity of the film and the book contributed to the establishment of the British NHS ten years later.

Plot Summary

The movie describes the early working years of doctor Andrew Manson, a young idealist played by Robert Donat. He begins with the highest intentions, but gradually becomes cynical and disillusioned. He decides it is better to have money than morals scruples

Production

The role of Christine was originally given to Elizabeth Allan. She sued MGM when she was replaced by Rosalind Russell. Vivien Leigh, Greer Garson, Elizabeth Allan and Geraldine Fitzgerald were considered for the role of Christine.

Rosalind Russell said that whilst working with Donat was a pleasure she and Vidor, as the only Americans working on the set, took a lot of criticism for taking jobs away from British players. She played Christine very well indeed and without a hint of a British accent.
